actinic keratoses on the body

Actinic keratoses (AK) are rough-textured, dry and scaly patches on your body caused by excessive exposure to the sun. Ten percent of AK develop into skin cancer. AK can be treated in a variety of ways from cryotherapy, topical medication and excision to Levulan Blu Light Therapy. Levulan Kerastick is a topical solution that, once absorbed, converts to a chemical that makes the AK cells extremely sensitive to light. When the AK cells are exposed to the BLU-U, blue light illuminator, a reaction occurs which destroys the AK cells.

After treatment, avoid exposure to the sun for at least 48 hours. The AK may redden, and some swelling and scaling may occur on your body. These effects are temporary and should completely resolve within four weeks.
